As conventional sources of oil and natural gas dry up, global energy
demand will lead increasingly to unconventional, alternative methods of
oil and natural gas discovery. Alternative oil exploration includes the
extraction of oil from shale and from tar sand, also called oil sand.
Natural gas extraction methods include basin centered gas accumulation,
the exploration of tight gas, coal bed methane, and gas to liquid
technology for transferring gas from remote regions to markets. There are large oil sand reserves in western Canada, and oil shale
is found in Utah and elsewhere.
It should be noted that natural gas is the most
clean-burning, non-pollutant of all the fossil fuels, and that global
energy needs will make alternative oil and natural gas exploration
highly profitable in the years to come.
