Biomass is the matter collected from plant and animal sources that can
be converted into energy. Biomass sources include plant matter such as
corn, sugar or wood and the waste matter from animals including pig and cow
feces. Biomass can be burned to heat liquid which turns turbines,
generating electricity. Biofuel is made from biomass. Biofuel is the term for biomass that has been converted into liquid fuel. Kinds of biofuel include ethanol (see our Ethanol page) and biodiesel, a diesel fuel made from biomass. Biodiesel can be used in diesel engines without alterations, whereas ethanol requires special engines for use. Biodiesel can be made from vegetable oil and certain types of plants. Biomass and biofuel are renewable energy sources, but there is a cost to turn the raw materials into a burnable, energy-producing form. A similar energy source is biogas. Biomass and certain waste processes produce gas, which can be processed to create renewable natural gas. LINKS:Info:
